Reopening of Syedpur airport demanded

Immediate reopening of Syedpur airport demanded. The airport has been closed for more than one and a half years although there remains all infrastructures for the aircraft to operate from there.

The lone airport of Rangpur Division with 6,800-feet runway facility was opened in July 5, 1979 and the flight operations continued till 2006. But it was declared closed on February 19, 2007 on an excuse of incurring loss.

On August 26, 2008, private airlines Rayal Bengal Airways and United Airlines started operation but their flights were also closed on January 28, 2009.

Since then the airport remained closed and all the stuffs and employees are passing their days idly.

Sources said, as a result of the closure of the airport, industrial installations like Uttara EPZ, Boropukuria coalmine, electricity generation plants, hard rock mine in Fulbari, tea gardens of Panchagarh are in trouble.

Moreover, establishment of new industries in the region is also being hampered, sources added.
